Untitled (I love you), 2013
Embroidery thread on domestic object
In Untitled (I love you), Henriksen embroiders “I love you” in her grandmother’s handwriting onto one of her grandmother’s old washcloths. Bringing together notions of domesticity, fragmentation, endurance, memory, and materiality, this piece combines the tenderness of a hand-written letter with the corporeal intimacy of a washcloth. The words render the washcloth a precious object and it becomes a haptic portrait, evoking the physical nature of writing a letter layered onto the nubby texture of the washcloth, rubbing and cleaning skin.
This washcloth is part of a broader exploration of making ephemeral, everyday occurrences and transient memories manifest through personal and found text embroidered onto items of material importance to both the artist and those she has loved and lost.
Henriksen is an interdisciplinary artist who works in video, paint, fiber, performance, and mixed media.
