Arlington Public Art
I am currently working with the activist volunteers of Arlington Public Art to shape new projects for East Arlington and the Massachusetts Avenue Corridor. The Town of Arlington recently completed a significant redesign of this area, narrowing the street, adding bike lanes, and installing new sidewalk surfaces, street furniture and landscaping. These changes are designed to make the area more pedestrian and bike friendly.
Now the Town of Arlington is supporting public art intiatives with the goal of contributing to the economic vitality, sense of place, and community spirit of this wonderful neighborhood. After listening to the community and identifying themes during an extensive community process, Arlington Public Art is launching two events which emphasize public participation:
- Playful, an afternoon of pop-up interactive art at Spy Pond Park on May 21; and,
- The Fox Festival, a community pageant featuring giant puppets made by children and families with artist Sara Peattie of the Puppeteers Cooperative. The Fox Festival Parade will be led by the Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band and kick off the Feast of the East in Capitol Square on June 18.
Planning for a third project is underway and will be announced in early June.
